Private safari from small bush camps in Northern Tanzania

Experience Tanzania's spectacular wildlife on a journey that brings you close to wildlife and nature away from the crowds and the mainstream route.

Our very own Jean Du Plessis has called Northern Tanzania his home for the past 20 years. In the last two decades, he has been pioneering off-the-beaten-track experiences, and been instrumental in training guides and rangers, and not least setting up small camps in remote areas.

This is the very essence of a quality safari - forget all about the old-school classic luxury lodges. We focus on the 3 things that matter the most: Location, ranger guides, and bush atmosphere.

In this tailor-made itinerary, Jean has combined 3 of the highlights in Northern Tanzania: Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. Y

ou might have heard of the places before, but this is nothing like an average safari. Quite the contrary, it's one of the most unique experiences in Tanzania, and it is the details and twists, that make all the difference.

Unique experiences you can look forward to:

  • Safari away from the crowds in small, remotely located bush camps.
  • Private 4WD safari vehicle and expert guide trained by Jean.
  • Superb camp by a hidden waterfall in beautiful Lake Manyara National Park.
  • Combining the Ngorongoro crater floor with a cultural visit in the surrounding highlands.
  • One of the best located migration camps in the Serengeti.

You get all this on a Wayo safari at a fraction of the cost of a traditional luxury safari. The safari experience is just as good - or even better. And you don’t even compromise on the quality of your bed or the food you will eat.

It’s just real bush camps - right where the action is happening. Wayo takes safaris back to what safaris should be.

Feel the real safari experience

One of the main objectives for us is to ensure that our safaris are much more than just ticking off “The Big Five”.

Wildlife, culture, and nature complement each other and are equally important to give you a true feeling of what Tanzania is all about.

Leave the vehicle behind, explore and get close to the red African soil and connect with the proud people and unique nature that makes it a lifelong experience to remember. And not least the peaceful tranquility of the savannah - at some of the world's most stunning national parks.

This is a great and family friendly safari

All our camps in this program are more than happy to welcome families, and the fact that you have your own private vehicle and guide is just ideal when traveling with kids. You can simply go at your own pace, where and when you want. That's quality traveling.

The big tents can easily accommodate 2 kids on mattresses if you travel with small children. Alternatively, you can stay in one of the family units, which consists of 2 interconnecting tents.

Most important of all is that all Wayo guides love taking families to the bush.

Program (this is only a suggestion and can always be amended)

Day 1: Arrival  Kilimanjaro

You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro Airport and driven to Rivertrees Country Inn outside the nearby provincial capital of Arusha. Here you have time to relax after the flight, take a dip in the pool in the huge park-like garden,  and just get off to a good start to your Tanzania safari.

Day 2: Beautiful Lake Manyara National Park

Drive approx. 2 hours towards Lake Manyara National Park. The goal is Wayo Manyara Green Camp - one of the most beautiful and authentic camps in the whole area - and one of just two inside the Manyara National Park itself.

Game drive and lunch in the park, which besides the lake and very different types of ecosystems and variety in the landscape is known for its tree-climbing lions. Dinner on the sandy riverbank under the stars. Maybe one of the area's elephant herds passes right by on its way to the waterhole.

Day 3: Safari on foot or by canoe in Manyara

Today there are different options for safaris depending on your personal interest. Take an easy hike along the shores of Lake Manyara, experience the hippos and flamingos at the lake from a canoe, or mix it up with game drives in your private jeep.

Finish the day back at the camp with sundowners by the waterfall and a dip in the natural pool with spectacular views of the rift and mountains.

Day 4: Village visit and onwards to the Ngorongoro Highlands

You are now heading for the next stop - Mysigio Camp inside the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands. A complete change of scenery. On the way, stop in Mto Wa Mbu - a scenic village known to be home to all 130 different ethnic groups in Tanzania.

Take a short walk around the village before enjoying a tasteful lunch at a small enterprise Wayo helped establish.

Continue towards the majestic Ngorongoro Highlands. Naturally best known for the iconic Ngorongoro Crater. But many visitors miss the spectacular surrounding highlands, which are equally beautiful and done right - with very few tourists. For this reason, you will stay at Mysigio - a lovely, small tented camp located 30 minutes from the descent to the crater.

Mysigio is operated in a very close partnership with the Masai village next door. This opens the doors to a unique cultural encounter. This is the real thing, and you feel it immediately, and just to wake up at Mysigo with the view of the lush highlands is fantastic.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater

Africa wakes up with the sun, so early departure today to get to the Ngorongoro Crater when the gate opens. Unlike the rest of the journey, you will this day share the experience with many others and experience more queuing.

There is only one Ngorongoro Crater and it’s one of the most iconic places on earth. But still well worth a visit. A true natural wonder.

Day 6: Onwards to Serengeti

Depending on the season, your final destination is Wayo's mobile bush camp in the southern or northern Serengeti. The drive takes you through very diverse landscapes and nature changes constantly.

During Dec-May, migration is located in the south, where the camp is located on Nabi Hill. Between June - Nov at Kogatende in the north close to the border with Kenya and the Masai Mara.

Day 7 - 8: Game Drives in Serengeti

Game drives, sundowners, chill ambiance around the fire, and interaction with other guests and staff is key to life at the Wayo camps. A big part of a safari is the relaxed atmosphere in the camps.

Wayo's Green Camps are not only uniquely located, to secure the feeling of being alone on the savannah. The small camps also offer intimacy and an atmosphere that elevates the experience to a higher level. Less is more.

Because they are small and blend perfectly into the surroundings, the wildlife very often comes close up. The staff looks after the camp like it's their home, and the cozy informal, nonhotel feel resonates all through your safari.

Get up early, enjoy a fresh coffee, and engage with the staff and the peaceful setting of the Serengeti camp. It really gives a different dimension to your safari.

Day 9: From Serengeti back to Arusha/Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, you drive to the nearest airstrip for a scenic flight by light aircraft back to Arusha. Watch the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater under you as you head towards Arusha.

Pick-up at the domestic airport and transfer to Rivertrees, where a day room awaits until it’s time for your transfer to the international airport in Kilimanjaro.
